04th August 2009 - Leven Canyon - 35k South Ulverstone

Located about 9k South West of Nietta or 35k South of Ulverstone, we found another delightful spot for an overnight stopover. This great area among forest and palms has new Septic toilets, a new large fire place in a shelter shed and has plenty of wood supplied. There are several bush walks. One goes to a lookout and another to the bottom of a valley has about 600 steps and returns to the camping area where there are some reasonably level areas for overnight camping. We recommend this picnic / camping area either for a day trip or an overnight stay.

1st August 2009 - Riana Pioneer Park Campground - Riana

Approximately 6k South of Penguin and 1.5k South of Riana, Pioneer Park offers powered and non-powered sites for the traveller. Hot showers, shelter sheds, septic toilets, BBQ’s, tables, drinking water are available with level grassy sites with some shade. The Riana General Store that has a gas refill point is approximately 1.5k from the camp sites. Caretaker, John visits the area every evening and collects a minimal fee. We enjoyed our stay at this park which is very quiet and scenic.

15th July 2009 - Montagu Park - North West Tasmania

Located about 20k West of Smithton on the tip of the North West Tasmania is Montagu Park Camping Area - We had the place to ourselves during our stay in this wonderful large, level shaded and open, well grassed camping area. There are plenty of bins, shelter sheds and septic toilets. There is also a shower cubicle with a hook for those wishing to have a shower. Water is abundant though it requires boiling prior to drinking. The boat ramp gets plenty of use with the locals collecting mussels and doing a bit of fishing. The site is well noted for flounder during the warmer months. This campsite has a caretaker during the summer months and is very popular from November until April each year. We highly recommend this site during the off season for a great place to spend a few days. There are no shopping facilities in the area so stock up well at Smithtown prior to arriving.

12th April 2009 - Hellyer Gorge - North West Tasmania

This is a great place to spend a night or two. Located about 25k North of the B23 / A10 Junction and 24k South Yolla, (39k South Wynyard) is Hellyer Gorge Rest Area. Easy bush walks along the river commence from the rest area on both sides of the road. There are several sites well out of the way to spend a night and also there are septic toilets, water (not suitable for drinking), picnic tables, bins and a shelter shed. All sites are reasonably level and during our stay, there was no traffic during the night.

5th April 2009 - Black River Campground - North West Tasmania

Black River campground is a large camping area that provides large open areas and also, plenty of bush sites. Long drop toilets are placed in various locations throughout the campground and there is a tank and tap that has water that needs boiling prior to use, at the end of the road. Located about 14k east of Stanley or about 8k east of from the A2 / B21 Junction, the dirt road to the river campsites is about 1k from the A2 Highway. Some fireplaces have been provided but there are no other facilities at the park. For quiet getaway in the bush near the ocean and river, we recommend this campground for an extended stay.
